Miniature Pigs have been selectively bred since the 1940s. Despite a common misconception, they are not simply Vietnamese Potbellied Pigs but rather a mix of breeds, with each farm developing its own unique bloodlines. Because of this, miniature pigs come in a wide range of shapes and sizes, and there is no one-size-fits-all answer to the question, “How big will they get?” Genetics, diet, environment, and lifestyle all play important roles.
Research comparing Miniature Pigs with standard farm hogs has disproven the myth that all pigs exceed 100 pounds and continue growing until age five. When fed a balanced diet, Miniature Pigs typically reach skeletal maturity between 16 and 24 months, at which point their growth plates close, and they no longer grow taller.
However, this does not mean they cannot gain weight. If given unrestricted access to food, a pig’s frame will expand, and significant weight gain will occur. Proper management and portion control are essential ultimately, maintaining a healthy weight is the responsibility of the owner.
The principle is simple: just as an adult human will continue to gain weight if they consistently eat more calories than they need, pigs will do the same. Unfortunately, many owners unintentionally overfeed or provide improper diets, leading to oversized pigs while expecting them to remain small.
It is also important to understand that growth cannot be stunted by restricting food. If this were possible, breeders everywhere would be producing small pigs but that is not the case. Underfeeding results only in malnutrition, not smaller stature. Signs of an undernourished pig include visible ribs, a protruding spine, sunken hips, loose skin, and a pronounced back end. By contrast, a properly fed miniature pig will be well-proportioned, healthy, and strong. They would not look like the Mini Pigs that I raise and showcase.
Choosing a Reputable Breeder
Prospective buyers should be cautious of breeders who claim to offer “the smallest pigs in the world.” Such statements are misleading. Notably, Penny the Pig from my farm currently holds the Guinness World Record for the smallest living domestic pig. This record can be independently verified via the Guinness Book tab.
Similarly, any breeder who guarantees a specific adult weight should be approached with skepticism. As outlined previously, it is impossible to guarantee the final size of an animal. At best, projected weights can be estimated based on genetics and general growth patterns.
It is also important to critically evaluate information found online. Some individuals within the breeding community intentionally spread false or damaging claims in an attempt to undermine competitors. For this reason, buyers are strongly encouraged to research breeders directly rather than relying on rumors or unverified sources.
For transparency, my Facebook page contains more than 60,000 photographs and 50,000 videos documenting pigs ranging from piglets to those more than 16 years old. Approximately 90% of this content has been provided by customers who own pigs from my farm. In addition, I maintain over two years of detailed scale documentation from one of my own breeding pigs, as well as a 34-minute video presentation of my breeding program.
The evidence is clear Miniature Pigs exist all it takes is a visit to my website or social media pages to see the thousands of photos for yourself.
My Breeding Program
I have the smallest class size Mini Pigs available. For the past 16 years, I have specialized in breeding the smallest class of Mini Pigs available. During this time, I have never needed to publicly list piglets for sale, as demand has always been met through a waiting list. I am now pleased to share that I am finally caught up a reflection of both the quality and desirability of my pigs. They are truly worth the wait.
